DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING THE DAY OF THE TEST OTHER THAN YOUR MEDICINES WITH A SMALL SIP OF WATER UP TO 4 HOURS BEFORE THE TES UNLESS given other instructions below. This also includes ALL inhalers. (Do Not Smoke the day of the test.) Bring a current list of meds and doses with you.
Diabetic Pills or Insulin
- Call your Family Doctor on how to reduce your medicine on the test day and for any bowel preparation.
- No diabetic pills the day of test and ½ of your normal Insulin dose. This also applies to the day before a colonoscopy while on clear liquids (Test your blood sugar before leaving home).
- Aspirin or Plavix:
- Call your family Doctor for instructions on how many days before the test to stop these medicines.
- Stop your aspirin 7 days before the test (Unless you are told to stay on this)
- Stop your Plavix __ days before the test (Unless you are told to stay on this).
- Stay on your Aspirin and or Plavix for your upper endoscopy
Arthritis Medicine
- Stop these meds 5 days before the test (Tylenol is OK)
- Stay on your Arthritis meds for your upper endoscopy
Coumadin
- Call your family Doctor or Cardiologist for instructions stopping your Coumadin or adjustments to your dose.
- Please stop your Coumadin___ days before the test
Vitamins/Supplements
- You should stop these 7 days before your procedure
- You may continue Vitamins and supplements up to the day of the test.
Water Pills
- Please do not take any water pills (diuretics) the day of the test.
- You may take your water pills on the day of the test.
Antibiotics
- If you receive antibiotics before procedures such as dental you may need antibiotics before the procedure, but not all colonoscopies or upper endoscopies require antibiotic prophylaxis.
- No antibiotics are needed per ASGE recommendations.
- We will give IV antibiotics in the office or hospital.
- You will take oral antibiotics 4 hours before the test with a small sip of water.
You are to take all your pain medicines and blood pressure medicines as you normally do even the day of the procedure with a small sip of water 4 hours before the test.
Other Med Changes – consult with your physician prior to your procedure.
